Fun Facts About Me
Share one fun fact about yourself: I was a competitive dancer in my youth!
The most inspiring engineer I know is ....... Because ........ ?: My father. He is the hardest worker I have met to date -- recognized by his company, employees, and coworkers as a brilliant and dedicated worker. He always encouraged me to pursue my dreams, whether it was a career in the creative arts or STEM. I was inspired by my father to become a well-respected and Professional Engineer.
Why did you choose to study engineering?: In my early years I excelled in the Arts, and also performed well in the math and sciences. I placed Engineering at Queen's University as my 7th and last option. I received a phone call from a current student at Queen's University who encouraged me to select Engineering. She spoke highly of Queen’s engineers – stating they were well-rounded and most likely to graduate with a job. She had me sold! I attended each of the engineering discipline nights during first year and quickly came to the realization that I was fascinated by electronics and technology. #ElectricalEngineeringForTheWin!
What are your best memories of your engineering education?: First Year at Queen’s University was incredible. I learned time-management skills, demonstrated the importance of volunteering and involvement within the community, and immersed me in a sea of like-minded individuals. I was able to navigate studies and life on my own, as I matured. Living on campus helps prepare one for the real world!
How do you apply your engineering degree to your current career?: My initial job as Protection Engineer was highly technical. Thus, I applied a majority of the tools, techniques and knowledge from class. It is important to note that Engineers love challenging themselves in addition to problem-solving. In engineering you must be resourceful. I continue to apply my engineering skillset in my current role as a Sr. IT Cybersecurity Specialist.
What do you love most about your career?: I love that my workplace allowed me to build from the foundation as a design engineer, lead million dollar projects as a Project Engineer and finally, pivot to a new virtual role in Cyber Security! I continue to grow, learn and transform as a Professional Engineer. In addition, I am able to volunteer as a Hydro One Ambassador, partake in many extracurriculars, succeed in my career and simultaneously run a successful passion project.
What advice would you give to someone hoping to pursue a career in engineering?: If I could speak with a timid 16 year old Cassondra, I would say this:
If you don't understand something, work on it -- don't be afraid to ask for help.
You will be one of the few who graduate in four years and land a phenomenal and fulfilling career!
