September 2019

Samantha Yuan is our Ambassador of the Month for September 2019! Samantha studied systems engineering at the University of Waterloo, and currently works as a Sr. Systems Designer at Shopify.

Why did you choose to study engineering?

My parents are both engineers, so some of the idea came from them. Engineering, in my opinion, also has a great balance between pure math and art. I have always thought of it as my comfort and creative zone.

How do you apply your degree to your career?

Being formally trained in engineering helps me see the world differently: underneath the surface where the system lies, I look at how and why do people use it, how it integrates into other systems, what are the implications of changes within the system, etc.

What advice do you have for someone hoping to pursue a career in engineering?

Engineering provides you a platform and you make your career the way you want it. Don’t be afraid to try new things. What you learn from engineering can always be transferred into skills applicable to other areas.

Why did you choose to study engineering?

Growing up, I was always intrigued with how things worked, and my parents encouraged me to look into the field of engineering. I enjoyed my high school math and science courses, and wanted to be able to design things to make people’s lives better, making engineering a good fit.

How do you apply your degree to your career?

My problem solving skills and programming experience gained through my engineering degree help me in developing solutions for manufacturing plants to make pharmaceutical and food (chocolate!) products more efficiently.

What advice do you have for someone hoping to pursue a career in engineering?

Keep working hard and be willing to learn, engineering can create so many opportunities. There are a variety of options to explore, whether it be the discipline of engineering or industry (manufacturing, research, etc.) or type of work (technical design, project management, etc.). Do what you enjoy and try new things to find a good fit for yourself.

Elizabeth Hinton is our Ambassador of the Month for July 2019! Elizabeth studied civil engineering at Lakehead University, and currently works as a Project Manager at AECOM.

Why did you choose to study engineering?

I am good at science and math and enjoy finding out why things work.

How do you apply your degree to your career?

I use the technical skills I learnt from sewer and watermain design, hydraulic modeling, road design and apply it to real life situations.

What advice do you have for someone hoping to pursue a career in engineering?

Engineering covers a wide range of opportunities, it will open a lot of doors, and you will be able find and enhance what you love to do. Don’t give up if you first don’t find what you are looking for.
