January 2019

Melissa Ryan is the first Ambassador of the Month for 2019! Melissa has both a Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science in environmental engineering from the University of Guelph, and currently works on storm water management projects for the City of Kitchener.

Why did you choose to study engineering?

I thought engineering = train conductor. I excelled at math, chemistry and physics and it was pure luck that I had a very good guidance counsellor that suggested I look into engineering and explained that there were many facets to it.

How do you apply your degree to your career?

I am a project manager that oversees the design and construction of stormwater management projects. I review the designs and ensure the project stays on track and on budget.

What advice do you have for someone hoping to pursue a career in engineering?

Let go of your preconceived notions. If you like solving problems and can communicate, you will be an excellent engineer.
