Also known as Computer Systems Engineering or Integrated Telecommunications and Computer Engineering
DISCIPLINE FOCUS: Computer engineering is a discipline that integrates several fields of electrical engineering and computer science required to develop computer hardware and software. Computer engineers usually have training in electronic engineering (or electrical engineering), software design, and hardware-software integration instead of only software engineering or electronic engineering. Computer engineers are involved in many hardware and software aspects of computing, from the design of individual microprocessors, personal computers, and supercomputers, to circuit design. Computer engineers deal with the integration of electronics, robotics, hardware components and software programs. They research and develop computer hardware components such as computer microchips, microprocessors, and circuit board and also write firmware and software application. In order to do this, computer engineer must have knowledge in both microprocessors system and computer programming. The difference between computer engineering and software engineering is that computer engineering is more focused on how the hardware and software interact, while software engineering looks more into the software with less emphasis on the hardware components.
IMPROVING THE WORLD THROUGH COMPUTER ENGINEERING: Computer engineers not only focus on how computer systems themselves work, but also how they integrate into the larger picture. For example, the work of computer engineers can be seen in our daily lives, such as communication systems, wireless systems and cameras.
POSSIBLE JOBS: Computer engineers can find work in almost any industry where computers are used e.g., banking, high tech sector, and the transportation industry.
