Materials Engineering

Also known as Metallurgical Engineering

DISCIPLINE FOCUS: Material engineers combine their knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, physics, and mechanical systems to develop, test, and create a wide range of materials and products. They work with various types of materials: metals, wood, polymers, ceramics and hybrids of these to design new materials with the best final properties. Materials engineering has a major focus is the use, function, and the process of making materials.

IMPROVING THE WORLD THROUGH MATERIALS ENGINEERING: Materials engineers work with improving the materials we use every day to make cars and planes lighter. They can also help to produce new materials with the right properties that industries need or selct which materials are best for specific applications.

POSSIBLE JOBS: Some possible jobs of material engineers are designing and testing new materials in the aerospace and automotive industries or for electronic devices, work with biomaterials, and work with transportation systems.
