DISCIPLINE FOCUS: There is an increasing demand for clean sources of energy such as wind, solar, geothermal, hydropower, and biomass energies. Truly sustainable development, however, will require the clever integration of renewable energy technologies into existing infrastructure, along with improved use of non-renewable energy sources. The integration of renewable energy technologies involves the development of distributed power systems and smart grid capabilities. Smart grids, in collecting and responding to the behaviours of supplier and consumers, improve the efficiency and sustainability of energy production and distribution. This degree program provides analytical and hands-on skills for designing, building, operating and enhancing sustainable energy systems that combine energy generation, distribution and utilization in an environmentally responsible and economically beneficial manner. Two streams are offered: Smart Technologies for Power Generation and Distribution, and Efficient Energy Generation and Conversion.
IMPROVING THE WORLD THROUGH SUSTAINABLE AND RENEWABLE ENERGY ENGINEERING: Engineers from this discipline are involved in the advancement and implementation of a wide variety of energy systems to improve the reliability of power generation and distribution, and to reduce energy consumption.
POSSIBLE JOBS: Energy is involved in all aspects of modern society, so possible jobs are diverse. In the private sector, employment may be found with the power generating companies, local distribution companies, and the engineering firms that design and produce wind turbines, solar panels, and housing technology. In the public sector, employment may be found with the national laboratories, regulators, non-governmental organizations, and all levels of government.
