Melissa Ryan is the first Ambassador of the Month for 2019! Melissa has both a Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science in environmental engineering from the University of Guelph, and currently works on storm water management projects for the City of Kitchener.

Why did you choose to study engineering?

I thought engineering = train conductor. I excelled at math, chemistry and physics and it was pure luck that I had a very good guidance counsellor that suggested I look into engineering and explained that there were many facets to it.

How do you apply your degree to your career?

I am a project manager that oversees the design and construction of stormwater management projects. I review the designs and ensure the project stays on track and on budget.

What advice do you have for someone hoping to pursue a career in engineering?

Let go of your preconceived notions. If you like solving problems and can communicate, you will be an excellent engineer.

Rhoshell Nicole Baker is our December Ambassador of the Month! Rhoshell studied civil engineering and works as a Transportation Technologist with GHD Group.

Why did you choose to study engineering?

Growing up, I have always wanted to fix/troubleshoot and invent things. Engineering can allow you to be creative while finding solutions to a problem.

How do you apply your degree to your career?

Being a Transportation Technologist it’s a daily task to use different methods for designing Roadways.

What do you love most about your career?

Being a part of a solution to get the project done

What advice do you have for someone hoping to pursue a career in engineering?

Treat your work with the respect it deserves; Know your responsibilities; Do not overspecialize if you don’t have to.

Tiffany Wong is our November Ambassador of the Month! Tiffany is a Senior Environmental Specialist with the Government of Canada. She graduated Summa Cum Laude in Chemical and Bioengineering from McMaster University.

Why did you choose to study engineering?

Engineers know how to approach and solve the world’s most challenging problems. Engineers work to try and find the best possible solutions and systems.

How do you apply your degree to your career?

The role of an Engineer is so diversified. From optimizing processes, to planning, managing projects, troubleshooting, leading teams, technical sales, or design, the careers opportunities are vast. Take the time to explore. Figure out what you like (and what you don’t like). Get the facts and shadow jobs to get a sense of where the career path will take you. Seek out as well as seize opportunities when they present themselves. Finally, work hard, persevere through challenges, and have a positive attitude.
